Danau adalah genangan air tawar maupun air asin yang sangat luas dan dikelilingi oleh daratan. Proses terjadinya danau berbeda-beda, ada yang terjadi karena aktivitas gunung berapi (danau Vulkanik), ada yang terjadi akibat pencairan es (danau Glasial), ada yang terjadi karena terbendung air sungai oleh aliran lava saat erupsi terjadi (danau bendungan alami), ada yang terjadi karena penurunan muka bumi (danau Tektonik) dan ada juga yang terjadi karena aktivitas manusia (danau buatan).

Danau yang terbesar di dunia ini adalah Danau Kaspia (Caspian) yang berada di antara daratan benua Eropa dan benua Asia dengan luas danau sekitar 394.299 km2. Danau Kaspia sering disebut dengan Laut Kaspia karena kandungan air di danau Kaspia adalah air asin dan memiliki karakteristik yang mirip seperti Laut.
